Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre acts as an addiction recovery centre for the 14 communities of Nunavik in northern Quebec. The Centre offers an 8-week in-house program in addition to a variety of continued care services including individual, couple, and family meetings, community support group activities as well as recovery sessions directly on the land.

 

In this context, the Inuktitut Teacher plays a crucial role:

  • Managing the class and its students and ensuring that there is no gap in the learning process.
  • Ensuring the safety of students at all times.
  • Maintaining a clean, respectful, and orderly classroom and following educational procedures as directed by the school.
  • Working with other departments to ensure all services and activities offered by Isuarsivik are culturally relevant and safe.
  • Daily promoting and embodying values with colleagues, guests, and all stakeholders.
  • Establishing wellness and safety practices to foster a positive and empowering workplace for all.

Purpose of position

Under the direction of the Inuit Values and Practices Manager, and the day-to-day supervision of the Coordinator of Youth Services, the Inuktitut Teacher is responsible for following lesson plans and supporting the evaluation of students based on learning outcomes. The Teacher monitors student performance and behaviour while maintaining a positive learning environment and supporting students’ wellbeing.

Essential duties
and responsibilities

  • For each student, liaise with their home community teacher and the school board to finalize their lesson plan for their time at the Centre, provide updates and prepare the reintegration plan.
  • Manage students properly and minimize distractions while encouraging student participation.
  • Pay attention to each individual student, ensures they understand the learning material and clarifies any questions or concerns.
  • Supervise students in the classroom, during activities and during breaks.
  • Provide any assignments based on the lesson plan.
  • Monitor students’ performance and behavior, and reports anything they feel is of concern.
  • Communicate in a friendly and positive manner toward parents, students, clinical staff, and administrators.
  • Keep records on attendance, accidents, and incidents.
  • Ensure the safety of students at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in education is considered an asset.
Work experience
  • 2 years of related experience.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow and enforce rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to interact and guide students of all ages.
  • Ability to create lesson plans.
  • Knowledgeable about core subjects.
  • Patience, tolerance, and flexibility.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to use tact and diplomacy and work under pressure.
  • Personal and professional experience in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Ability to draft reports, documents and work plans on a computer.
  • Strong ability to work independently and/or in a team.
  • Ability to work outside standard office hours.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Candidate must be willing to submit to a criminal records check.
Language
  • Ability to read, write and speak Inuktitut as well as English are mandatory.
  • Ability to read, write and speak French is considered an asset

Work environment

  • The incumbent must balance multiple demands and urgent requests from guests, staff and partners. 
  • Must be prepared to meet the personal and professional challenges associated with living in a northern, isolated community with limited resources.

Salary / Benefits

  • Working conditions are based on Nunavik’s health and social services network.
  • Salary will be determined depending on qualifications and experience.
