Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre acts as an addiction recovery centre for the 14 communities of Nunavik in northern Quebec. The Centre offers an 8-week in-house program in addition to a variety of continued care services including individual, couple, and family meetings, community support group activities as well as recovery sessions directly on the land.
In this context, the Elder Advisor plays a crucial role:
- Mentoring Cultural Counsellors.
- Facilitating groups in collaboration with the Programs department staff.
- Assisting in the development of activities, supplying activities based on Inuit culture and practices.
- Working with other departments to ensure all services and activities offered by Isuarsivik are culturally relevant and safe.
- Daily promoting and embodying values with colleagues, guests, and all stakeholders.
- Establishing wellness and safety practices to foster a positive and empowering workplace for all.
Purpose of position
Under the direction of the Inuit Values and Practices Manager, the Elder Advisor is responsible to assist in the development, implementation and coordination of activities and mentoring of Programs staff based on Inuit culture and practices.
Essential duties
and responsibilities
Mentoring
- Provides mentorship in groups and individual for all Cultural Counsellors.
- In collaboration with the Inuit Values and Practices Manager and Program Recovery Manager, provide support to employees of each department for their professional development and their personal emotional needs.
Counselling
- Facilitate guest groups with both IVP and Recovery Counsellors
- In collaboration with Programs Managers, ensure services and activities offered by Isuarsivik are culturally relevant and safe.
- Ensure guests can express themselves in Inuktitut.
- Participate in individual counselling for guests.
Planning
- Plan the development of activities and therapeutic services based on Inuit culture and practices such as cultural/traditional counselling, art activities and on-the-land activities.
- Contribute to the revision of the current clinical program and design of the family services.
- Ensure the inclusion of a strong cultural/traditional as well as on-the-land components in the programming.
- Plan and deliver professional development activities for cultural counsellors.
Interpretation/Translation
- Assist in the verification and proper use of Inuktitut in both oral and written form in relation to the facilitation, counselling and overall activities at the Centre.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Education
- Expert knowledge of Inuit culture and practices.
- Expert knowledge of Inuktitut.
- University degree in a discipline of social intervention an asset.
Work experience
- 15 years in the field of social intervention.
- Experience in the field of addictions would be considered an asset (inpatient and/or outpatient program).
- Experience in service planning would be considered an asset.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to use tact and diplomacy and work under pressure.
- Personal and professional experience in a cross-cultural setting.
- Ability to draft reports, documents and work plans on a computer.
- Strong ability to work independently and/or in a team.
- Ability to work outside standard office hours.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Candidate must be willing to submit to a criminal records check.
Language
- Ability to read, write and speak Inuktitut as well as English are mandatory.
Work environment
- The incumbent must balance multiple demands and urgent requests from guests, staff and partners.
- Must be prepared to meet the personal and professional challenges associated with living in a northern, isolated community with limited resources.
Salary / Benefits
- Working conditions are based on Nunavik’s health and social services network.
- Salary will be determined depending on qualifications and experience.
