Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre acts as an addiction recovery centre for the 14 communities of Nunavik in northern Quebec. The Centre offers an 8-week in-house program in addition to a variety of continued care services including individual, couple, and family meetings, community support group activities as well as recovery sessions directly on the land.

In this context, the Coordinator – Youth and Family plays a crucial role in:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day management of youth and family programming delivery to in-house guests to ensure safety and quality services during their time at the Centre.
  • Implementing measures to maintain health certification standards from Accreditation Canada and the Quebec Department of Health and Social Services (MSSS).
  • Daily promoting and embodying values with colleagues, guests, and all stakeholders.
  • Establishing wellness and safety practices to foster a positive and empowering workplace for all.

Purpose of position

Under the direction of the Recovery Manager, the Coordinator – Youth and Family is a team leader who oversees the application of clinical processes and policies to ensure the smooth delivery and quality of Isuarsivik’s services. The Coordinator – Youth and Family is a great communicator and solution-driven individual who is also responsible for identifying and managing risks, as well as sharing them with department management. More specifically, the Coordinator – Youth and Family is in charge of the design and implementation of youth and family clinical interventions related to program as well as the day-to-day management of the Youth Counsellor and the experience of guests during their time at the Centre.

Essential duties
and responsibilities

Guests

  • Assist in the intake process of youth/family guests applications.
  • Complete the intake process at the Centre with assigned guests upon arrival.
  • Participate in and supports the Youth Counsellor in helping guests in identifying potential problem areas, setting goals and aftercare plans.
  • Ensure guests are respecting their commitment to the Centre rules, participating in the program as per their engagement upon arrival.
  • Address guests’ concerns and discuss them with recovery team if needed.
  • Undertake and oversee periodic room checks for cleanliness and/or prohibited substances.
  • Advise supervisor of concerns relating to guests and/or activities at the Centre.


Guest Files

  • Manage and maintain guest files, records and reports.
  • Oversee maintenance of a complete file on each assigned guest which includes (running record regarding guest behaviour, attitude, activities and progress for the entire stay at the Centre).
  • Oversee, and assess Youth counsellors is keeping guest files updated and within the norms of the charting process and approach.
  • Maintain strict guest confidentiality.

 

Program Development

  • Responsible for the design of manuals and program guides for youth and family clinical interventions related to program, in collaboration with the Family Programming Consultant, Recovery Program Manager, and Inuit Values and Practices team.
  • Responsible for collaborating in developing and implementing clinical and program related forms specific to youth and families (acceptance packages, consent forms, house rules, etc.)
  • Responsible for collaborating in developing and implementing (with Inuit Values and Practices, Family Programming Consultant) developmentally appropriate youth and family programs.

 

Facilitation Skills

  • Assist parents to carry out behavioral plan supportively and seeks to build parental capacity to respond to youth concerns; mobilizes attendants to support parents in responding to youth concerns in “off hours”.
  • Prepare the Centre (classroom, supplies, activities etc.) for the new cycle.
  • Deliver program information according to the developed program.
  • Ensure the guests understand the presentation/lecture and material.
  • Observe and participates in group discussions and counselling with guests.
  • Plan, implement and participate in group activities in conjunction with the other departments.
  • Organize guest transport when required.

 

Management

  • Oversee, and assess Youth Counsellor’s day-to-day facilitation of groups and individual counselling.
  • Coordinate with Recovery Counsellors, family sessions, linking in youth intervention knowledge and expertise.
  • Prioritize practical integration and liaising with Inuit Values and Practices Department (Youth Coordinator/Culture Coordinator/Cultural Counsellors) related to Youth and Family services.
  • Represent youth and families during the clinical team meetings, and to act as the central person where information related to youth and family concerns will be brought (by other program staff), synthesized and responded to.
  • Mobilize response plans with support of the Youth Coordinator and Recovery Program Manager/Family Programming Consultant to address concerns amongst the youth/family, documenting intervention, subsequent follow up, and any behavioral plans in the clinical record.
  • Mobilize behavioral plans in “off hours” during evenings and weekends by communicating with Coordinator – Attendants about behavioral plans and supportive responses.
  • Main contact and lead in enhancing and supporting the developing relationship with KI to support youth intervention plans in house (obtaining required information) and streamlined integration back to communities’ post life at the Centre.
  • Guide and coach the support staff in order to ensure guests are supported.
  • Provide youth specific training to front facing staff to promote conceptualizing of youth development and wellbeing, best practices in youth intervention, and trauma informed care.
  • Work collaboratively within the recovery team to support and create intervention plans.
  • Ensure that the assessments and interventions conducted are based on best practices.
  • Promote the development of professional qualifications of Youth Counsellors through continued communication with the Recovery Program Manager and Inuit Values and Practices Manager.
  • Assist Recovery Program Manager to ensure program compliance with mandatory reporting laws, incident reporting, ethical guidelines and other reporting guidelines as required.
  • Schedule the staff, including counsellors, negotiating absences and replacing such staff in support of youth.

 

Teamwork

  • Responsible for leading/collaborating to develop schedules and programming for youth and family recreational activities outside of program times (evenings/weekends). This may include working with Inuit Values and Practices on scheduling cultural activities, sports/recreation, community events, tasking attendants with evening activities (pre-planned/prepared) for youth and families in the Centre.
  • In collaboration with Youth Coordinator (Inuit Values and Practices), responsible to liaise with the school and daycare to ensure behavioral plans are understood and implemented at all levels of service beyond Recovery and Inuit Values and Practices linkages.
  • Attend daily team meeting and provides constructive feedback to other counselling staff.
  • Debrief daily with counselors and inform evening attendants of any major issues/concerns prior to their shift.
  • Complete and submit required incident reports to supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality of staff and guests verbally, written, and on social media platforms.
  • Participate in on-call shifts rotation during the cycle.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Education
  • University degree, preferably a Masters’ level, in a discipline of social intervention.
Work experience
  • 1 year of experience as supervisor or coordinator.
  • 3 years of experience in the field of youth services (social services, youth protection, rehabilitation, early childhood education, school, recreation).
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong communication (both oral and written) skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to use tact and diplomacy and work under pressure.
  • Willingness to receive coaching.
  • Able to use all common office equipment including computer, projector and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Promotes and maintains a healthy lifestyle in the community.
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability and willingness to maintain confidentiality.
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver and results oriented.

Language
  • Ability to read, write and speak English are mandatory.
  • Ability to read, write and speak French is considered an asset.

*Candidates with ability to read, write and speak Inuktitut will be prioritized.
