The Specialized Nurse plays a crucial role in:

  • Promoting the health and well-being of the guests and staff by using preventive means to avoid illness and injuries.
  • Managing prescribed medication for guests.
  • Looking after the sick and the injured and taking all the appropriate measures required in these circumstances, including referral to medical or emergency services.
  • Monitoring and supporting guests that experience withdrawal.
  • Providing routine follow-ups for pregnant guests and young infants.
  • Working with other departments to ensure all services and activities offered by Isuarsivik are culturally relevant and safe.

Purpose of position

Under the direction of the Recovery Program Manager, the Specialized Nurse is responsible for detecting and preventing illness, injuries, and diseases. They perform routine medical examinations, administer specific tests and use the equipment for this purpose. They give advice on hygiene, pregnancy, nutrition, venereal diseases, alcohol, and drugs.

Essential duties
and responsibilities

  • Participates in organizing various information and other campaigns designed to prevent contagious diseases and accidents or promote general hygiene.
  • Manages prescribed medication for guests and maintains safety and confidentiality standards.
  • Identifies dangerous situations and, if necessary, reports to those concerned and sees that appropriate notices are posted. Makes appropriate recommendations and suggestions to the administration.
  • In case of illness or injury, administers first aid. Depending on the disease or injury, they may refer a guest to a doctor or a hospital.
  • Performs specific functions related to the well-being of guests according to medical prescriptions.
  • Monitors and supports guests that may experience withdrawal symptoms.
  • Provides routine follow-up to pregnant guests and young infants.
  • Opens and updates the required files, prepares the reports requested, keeps an up-to-date inventory, maintains the material and equipment at their disposal and sees to the cleanliness and orderliness of their office.
  • Trains other staff and coordinates support staff in performing duties related to the implementation of health-related programs.
  • Performs any other related duties.

Qualifications

Education
  • Member of the College of Nurses in Quebec.
  • Training on addictions, mental health, and perinatal care (an asset).
Work experience
  • 5 years of experience in the field of nursing.
  • Experience in the delivery of a program with a focus on substance use, mental health and perinatal care (an asset).
Knowledge and Skills
  • Urgent care and emergency care skills to respond promptly to medical issues.
  • Ability to educate guests and their families on essential safety precautions, diagnosis, and course of treatments, minimizing the risk of guest harm, and maximizing recoveries.
  • Possess communication skills with a combination of active listening, observing, speaking, and empathizing to effectively deal with guests, their families, doctors, and other medical staff.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to handle complex workplace situations and calmly develop creative solutions.
  • Personal and professional experience in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Strong ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to work outside standard office hours.
  • Candidate must be willing to submit to a criminal records check.
Language
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Inuktitut as well as English (mandatory).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak French (an asset).

Work environment

  • Isuarsivik is undergoing a major transition that requires flexibility, creativity, and adaptability.
  • The incumbent must balance multiple demands and urgent requests from guests, staff, and partners.
  • The incumbent must also be prepared to meet the personal and professional challenges associated with living in a northern, isolated community with limited resources.

Salary / Benefits

  • Working conditions are based on Nunavik’s health and social services network.
  • Salary will be determined depending on qualifications and experience.

  • Mentorship or training program available (if requirements are not met).
