The Maintenance Worker plays a crucial role in:

  • Maintain all assets of the Centre (buildings, vehicles, equipment etc.);
  • Assist in the development of processes and procedures for maintenance tasks/responsibilities and inventory;
  •  Work with other departments to ensure all services and activities offered by Isuarsivik are culturally relevant and safe;
  • Promote the development of a positive cultural identity amongst Inuit staff and clients.

Purpose of position

Under the direction of the Administration Manager and the day-to-day supervision of the Coordinator, Maintenance and Assets, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for all the maintenance needs of the Centre.

Essential duties
and responsibilities

Maintenance

  • Maintain vehicles (trucks, ATV’s and snowmobiles):
  • Keep record log of maintenance on each vehicle;
  • Maintain On-the Land equipment and ensure they are in good working condition
  • Booking garage appointments for all maintenance tasks:
    • Oil change;
    • Tire change;
    • All maintenance issues;
  • Procurement:
    • Researching parts;
    • Ordering parts;
  • Maintaining main Centre and apartments buildings:
    • work orders;
    • snow removal near door ways and stairs at the office;
    • minor plumbing repairs and assess when professional resources are needed;
    • minor carpentry repairs and assess when professional resources are needed;
    • minor electrical repairs and assess when professional resources are needed;
    • disassemble and assemble furniture;
  • Responsible for 24-hour emergency maintenance;
  • Keep maintenance storage organized;
  • Building check-ups when office is closed to ensure the furnace is still functioning (during holidays);
  • Assists the Administration Manager in planning inventory and maintenance projects;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Administration Manager.

Security

  • Maintenance of the security system (Chubb)
  • Maintenance of emergency equipment
  • Assist the Administration Manager in compliance of the Emergency Response Plan.

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Willingness to undergo ad hoc training for specific systems of the buildings and engage in continued education
Work experience
  • 2 – 3 years in a similar position;
Knowledge and Skills
  • Personal and professional experience in a cross-cultural setting;
  • Ability to draft reports, documents and work plans on a computer;
  • Strong ability to work independently and/or in a team;
  • Ability to work outside standard office hours;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Candidate must be willing to submit to a criminal records check.
Language
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Inuktitut as well as English (mandatory).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak French (an asset).

Work environment

  • Isuarsivik is undergoing a major transition that requires flexibility, creativity, and adaptability.
  • The incumbent must balance multiple demands and urgent requests from guests, staff, and partners.
  • The incumbent must also be prepared to meet the personal and professional challenges associated with living in a northern, isolated community with limited resources.

  • Salary will be determined depending on qualifications and experience.

  • Mentorship or training program available (if requirements are not met).

It is the Centre’s objective to favor and promote the employment of beneficiaries from one of the Inuit land claims agreements. Therefore, it is at the discretion of the Board to waive any of the qualification requirements and implement a training or mentoring plan if necessary.
