Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre acts as an addiction recovery centre for the 14 communities of Nunavik in northern Quebec. The Centre offers an 8-week in-house program in addition to a variety of continued care services including individual, couple, and family meetings, community support group activities as well as recovery sessions directly on the land.
In this context, the Detention Support Counsellor plays a crucial role in:
- Group and individual counselling as well as documenting and facilitating activities with JBQNA beneficiaries who are navigating the legal system.
- Establishing wellness and safety practices to foster a positive and empowering workplace for all.
Purpose of position
Under the direction of the Coordinator – Detention Support, the Detention Support Counsellor is responsible for providing comprehensive, flexible and adapted substance use services to JBNQA beneficiaries who are currently detained, on house arrest or navigating the legal system.
Essential duties
and responsibilities
Pre-care Support
- Provide pre-care services for guests who are currently detained, on house arrest or navigating the legal system.
- Connect with detained guests in-person or through video conferencing for individual counselling
- Facilitate group sessions within partnering institutions.
Administration
- Assist guests in filling documentation and applications to Isuarsivik’s in-house services.
- Writing case notes and ensuring guest information is stored confidentially and securely.
Networking
- Maintain positive working relationships with community organizations, Makivvik Justice, lawyers and probation officers.
- Liaise with lawyers, and probation or parole officers to ensure wraparound care.
- Attend court proceedings as requested by the guest.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- University degree in a discipline of social intervention
- Ministry recognized certification and in good standing with their professional order is considered an asset.
Work experience
- 3-5 years of experience as an addiction counsellor (inpatient and/or outpatient program).
- Experience in counseling guests who present sexual abuse trauma.
Knowledge and Skills
- Basic computing skills.
- Advanced facilitation skills.
- Ability to work in a team and autonomously.
- Ability and willingness to maintain confidentiality.
- Self-reliant, good problem solver and results oriented.
- Personal and professional experience in a cross-cultural setting.
- Candidate must be willing to submit to a criminal records check.
Language
- Ability to read, write and speak Inuktitut as well as English are mandatory.
Work environment
- The incumbent must balance multiple demands and urgent requests from guests, staff and partners.
- Must be prepared to meet the personal and professional challenges associated with living in a northern, isolated community with limited resources.
Salary / Benefits
- Working conditions are based on Nunavik’s health and social services network.
- Salary will be determined depending on qualifications and experience.
