Q & A – Admission & Intake

Can I apply with extended family or friends?

Of course! At Isuarsivik, we understand that families come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you want to apply with your partner, your children, grandparents, foster children, uncles, aunts, or best friends, we will treat you as a family unit at the centre.

Why do I need to fill out a medical form?

If you are applying for the 8-week in house program, there are many activities which will require you to participate physically, mentally, and emotionally during your stay here. It is important for us to know if you have any physical issues such as injuries, mobility, or allergies so that we can plan ahead to accommodate you. It I also important for us to know if you are taking medication or if you have any pre-existing mental health conditions or symptoms so that we can tailor the program to your needs! It’s for our safety and yours!

Am I automatically accepted once I apply? How do I know if I’m accepted?

Applying to the program is the first step in attending the in-house program, however there might be individuals on the waiting list who have applied before you. We also need to consider and process all the information you provided us and there are a few more steps we need to complete prior to your arrival. We do not automatically accept people for these reasons. When you are accepted into the program, we will contact you or your referral worker by phone or email. We will also send you and official letter of acceptance.

I have conditions to attend Isuarsivik. Am I automatically accepted?

Isuarsivik is under no obligation to accept individuals to our program regardless of if you are mandated to attend. If you apply with conditions, your application will be considered the same as everyone else who applies. We will work with you and your lawyer or probation officer to ensure a smooth transition. We are now able to offer individual counselling sessions through visio if you are serving time in an institution.

Is there a waiting list to attend the program? How do you decide who is priority?

At Isuarsivik, we receive many applications to attend our program, and so to ensure fair consideration for everyone we prioritize people initially based on their date of application. We also prioritize high risk individuals such as; pregnant women, individuals with severe physical complications from alcohol/drug use (cirrhosis of the liver, etc.), vulnerable populations (individuals fleeing domestic violence, homelessness, etc.).

I want to speak to someone, but I’m not ready to commit to an 8-week program. Do I have any other options?

No worries! At Isuarsivik we understand that change happens gradually and not everyone is ready or able to attend an 8-week in-house program. We now offer a variety of community-based services such as individual counselling (in person or remote), and community support groups.

Do you offer services in Inuktitut?

Yes! We are able to offer services in English, Inuktitut and French. Please let us know which language you are most comfortable and we will ensure you are paired with a counsellor who can accommodate you.

Do I need to be sober to access community supports?

A requirement of the 8-week in house program, is sobriety for those 8 weeks in the center, however it is not a requirement to access community supports. We do however, ask that you are sober when you show up to community support groups or for scheduled counselling sessions. If a counsellor suspects you are under the influence, they will reschedule with you for a better time.

I don’t feel comfortable to access my community counsellor because they are too close to me or my situation, we have a history, or other reasons. What can I do?

At Isuarsivik, we understand that working with a counsellor requires trust on both sides in order to feel comfortable. If this is your experience, please let us know right away and we can pair you with another counsellor.

How do I travel to Kuujjuaq? Do I pay?

You are welcome to book your own tickets if you wish, however you can also do so free of charge at your local social services. You should bring your official acceptance letter with your travel dates and let them know you are travelling to attend Isuarsivik.

Can I work while I’m in the program? How do I receive financial assistance?

The 8-week in house program is full time and intensive requiring your full physical and mental participation, so unfortunately work is not possible during the program. However, financial support may be available to you be your employer’s health benefits. Please ask your employer for the appropriate forms to fill out. Isuarsivik can provide proof required that you are attending the program.
