OUR STORY

Under the leadership of the Northern Village of Kuujjuaq and with the support of Makivik corporation, Isuarsivik Treatment Centre was first established in 1994 as a community organization dedicated to offering specialized substance abuse services to local clients. Concurrently, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services was gradually recognizing the need to put in place a regional service supply in regards to substance abuse. By the end of the 1990s, Isuarsivik accepted to open its residential treatment program for substance abuse to clients from across Nunavik.

Isuarsivik Treatment Centre has been offering a culturally relevant program since 1994. The Board of Directors felt that over the years, the adaptation of southern programs by the Inuit had had only mitigated results. It was decided to develop a totally new program. Aware of the ongoing need for services, the Board of Directors made a decision in 2006 to invest in the development of a distinct approach to substance abuse rehabilitation based on the experience of a group of dedicated professionals and community-based volunteers from Nunavik. The need for an Inuit program based on Inuit values, complemented by best practices in the field of addictions has resulted in the development of an Inuit trauma-informed service approach to substance abuse. This approach is now delivered through a gender-specific 42 days’ closed residential program that can be offered in Inuktitut.

Our logo

Life can be re-newed, re-born or start fresh, as in a person restarting a new life in sobriety. That was the meaning behind choosing the pussy-willow as a logo for Isuarsivik since this plant renews, re-grows every year in all parts of Nunavik.
